2008 Final Grant Disbursement Descriptions

Children's Museum - Establish a Secret Garden visible over a brick wall off Orange St. in Historical Wilmington; Water feature & plantings with benches to allow citizens & tourists to rest and enjoy the setting.

Wilmington Christian Academy -  Landscape and beautify area between High School and Jr. High/Elementary buildings on campus using plantings, stones, lighting, and benches.

Cape Fear Hospice - Completion of a 3 yr, phased garden project named Heritage Garden to bridge the Hospice Care Center & new Life Care Counseling CenterSculpture, a free-flowing waterway & reflecting pond, labyrinth, walkways, lighting, memorial walls, and benches are incorporated within various garden “rooms”.  Designed to impact the entire community as special events and activities will be planned within the gardens in addition to benefiting patients, families, staff and visitors to the campus.

Wilmington Academy of Arts & Sciences –  Build 2 vegetable gardens and a Snow Pea “Tee-Pee” to teach students a scientific introduction to vegetable gardening and promote confidence and appreciation in growing their own gardens. Educational component to carry through from preparing beds, planting, composting, harvesting, & celebrating with a spring salad each year.  Incorporated into the science curriculum & Newsletter to include updates.

NHHS -  Transplanting of shrubbery, adding a perennial garden and water garden to senior courtyard on school campus.  To be installed and maintained by students in the English as a Second Language Horticultural Class.

Arboretum - Landscaping for new parking lot area including trees, shrubs, perennials and irrigation supplies. This is a part of the redesign of the Arboretum to allow safer entry and exit to the property and will incorporate a new main entrance, storm water best management practice demonstration site, parking for larger events, and an additional beautiful area to showcase new varieties of labeled plant material that thrive in our coastal region.

JT Hoggard - Install a shade garden on school grounds where trailers used to be and install irrigation and sod/seeding at the main entrance to the school.  The Horticultural FFA students would be involved in the whole project implementation and ongoing maintenance as a part of their curriculum.

UNCW - Provide a peaceful and well landscaped Memorial Garden in memory of UNCW students and faculty.  To be located in the University Commons area at UNCW where many students, staff, and visitors pass by each day.

Little Chapel - Plant and maintain a Biblical Garden to be enjoyed by beach visitors, Loop walkers, and beach residents.  Flowers from the garden will be taken to shut-ins as well. Little Chapel Garden Club to implement, maintain, and research Biblical plantings.

Airlie Garden Outdoor Butterfly Garden to surround the new Butterfly House that will be constructed at Airlie Gardens.  Plant materials will be specifically designed to attract native butterflies and this area will serve as an outdoor classroom for visitors and schoolchildren.

Carolina Beach - Public space in center of Town of Carolina Beach to be beautified as a garden.  The “Town Gazebo” would be enhanced by the planting of perennial flowers and evergreen bushes and palms, all at the gateway of the boardwalk where thousands of citizens and tourists congregate each year.

Habitat for Humanity - Students from Cape Fear Community College Landscaping program select material and provide labor to landscape the Habitat homes.  The grant is for plant materials to be used in the landscaping.

Forest Hills Elementary School - Enhance the ground of the recently renovated Forest Hills Global Elementary, adding trees and perennials to the rear entrance of the new addition.

Davis Health Care - To complete project to turn a courtyard space into an attractive horticultural therapy and recreational program area for residents, visiting families, and general population who take advantage of horticultural classes held there each week.  Vegetables, herbs, annuals, perennials, trees, and decorative plants known for their therapeutic benefits will be installed.

Communities In Schools - Develop a street-front garden for a center for at-risk youth at the former Jail/Law Enforcement Center in downtown Wilmington .  A cooperative effort by other local agencies and organizations will help guide students through the process of designing, implementing, and maintaining the garden; students will raise flowers and vegetables to sell at the Farmer’s Market.

Cape Fear Community College - Beautify 2 new areas of the downtown Campus including a new courtyard and culinary planters on the river that are accessible to students, visitors, and the general public.

Creekwood S Residents - To expand an existing community garden to provide healthy vegetables and fruits to senior residents while providing learning opportunities to youth.

Roland Grise Middle - Enhance the existing landscape by planting a variety of trees, bushes and vines in specific areas across the campus.

Isaac Bear PTSA - Provide landscaping and irrigation and create an outside courtyard where students can eat, socialize, and study.
